Norma was found in the
front garden of Derek’s home in Stourport on Saturday 4th
October 2008 at 12pm, she only weighed 178 grams so she
had to be brought in to care because she would not have
survived hibernation, being another autumn juvenile.
Derek brought Norma to me at work on Saturday lunchtime,
as I didn’t have any of my rescue kit with me I had to
rally round the residents at Walshes Farm Caravan Park,
for various items which included a hot water bottle,
towels and food.
After warming her up she ate a little dry cat
food and had a
drink of international rehydration fluid.
At home she continued to thrive and gained weight ( 276
grms) but after 12 days she went off her food, she
actually dropped 56 grms and would not eat anything for
6 days, after trying everything and even force feeding
her which she didn’t like, I decided to try her on a
dead mouse (fluff) she nearly bit my hand off, after
this she was given a dead day old chick, she absolutely
adores these, and another of my rescues Bramble also
eats them. Norma is now eating a variety of food but
still prefers the chicks and now weighs 423 grams, we
have still a way to go to get her up to weight for
hibernation but she is doing really well as I write this
story. Norma went into hibernation weighing 859grams on
28th December 2008 in one of our outside hutches, she
woke up occasionally in January but finally went to
sleep on the 23rd January and didn't wake until 8th May
when weighed she had gone down to 710 grams, after
feeding her up and moving her into our pre release pen
she finally returned to the wild on the 23rd May 2009. |
