George.

George was found in the
middle of the night lay on his back in the gutter in
June 2008.
On first inspection, we couldn't find any external
injuries. He weighed in at 729 grams. However he did
have runny eyes and nose and his breathing was laboured
and 'wheezy'. I suspected that he had got pneumonia,
brought on by lung worm. George was also heavily
infested with ticks. We began treatment straight away.
He was put on antibiotics and wormed and kept, as usual,
on a heat pad. George wouldn't eat at first, so he had
to be syringe fed throughout the day with a prescription
food which is high in protein to get him back on his
feet. He soon got his appetite back. When cleaning out
the individual hedgehog pens, I temporarily put the
hedgehogs in a clean box (as above). This is when I
first noticed that George had a strange habit of
spreading his legs wide open to have a poo! I had never
seen this before.
After 3 weeks of treatment he had put on 300 grams.
Before he was released, I took George into Comberton
Primary School and did a talk to the children on the
welfare of hedgehogs.
